Emily and Brian Freund, owners of That French Place, answered some questions so that we could learn more about this destination business in downtown Charlevoix.
What are three unique aspects of your business?
We are stand out from other businesses by staying true to our brand.
We are authentically French and try very hard to recreate the experience of being in a French Patisserie right here in Charlevoix. We also stand out by having the owners, Brian and Emily always front and center of our business. They are the ones making the food, engaging the customers and running the store. We also always try to be ambassadors for the city of Charlevoix. We know the importance of having a solid, diverse business community working together for common goals. When Charlevoix shines we all win.
What product in your business is different from others in town?
There are lots of bakeries, cafes and even a growing list of creperies popping up. We stay true to being completely authentic. We want to transport you with every bite. Our crepes
are in the style of the crepes of Brittany and we do buckwheat crepes better than anyone.
What service does your business provide that is different than most others?
We have a very small shop and we need most of our space for production. That leaves little room for customers to gather. What we give to those customers though is the friendliest service possible. We know most of our customers and work hard to get to know all of them. It feels very much like a family in That French Place.
What is your experience and background? Brian and Emily are foodies who love traveling. That passion has allowed them to learn skills all over the world and bring those experiences back to That French Place.
We are both self taught and take pride in the hard work and dedication it’s taken to achieve the quality in our products that we have.
What is something about your business that customers do not expect? We don’t speak French. Our food is so authentic you’d assume that we must be French or at least speak it well. We do not.
Do you have employees? If so, how many? Feel free to highlight some or share ways that you help make them feel valued. We have 3 Full time employees. They are like family. We empower our staff to have confidence and knowledge about our products. We have begun taking our full time employees to Europe with us for 2 weeks to show them exactly what we are trying to do at That French Place. It invests them in the business in a completely different way.
What is one of your favorite customer testimonials your business has received? We are fortunate to get a lot of French customers and it is a huge compliment when they tell you it’s just like it is in France. A compliment from a French person about bread and crepes means a tremendous amount!
